We used to boast of how small our Army and Navy were, and how little influence generals and admirals had in Washington. This begs the question, if allusions like this to popular culture better depict the time and represent it to the reader, is not an author concerned with authenticity obligated to use them? Also there is a considerable feminist theme. It does, however, provide insight into the aspects of the modern situation that Vonnegut sees as central and meaningful.

This book is an excellent example of how levity can be just as good at delivering a polemic against war as more gritty, realistic depictions like you might find in The Kindly Ones or in Hollywood movies. I loved how in Bluebeard he snapped back and forth with the “back to bouebeard past: But the thing that’s occupying my mind about the book right now is endings.

Rabo Karabekian is an awesome narrator in general, because he does not bullshit. There is a place where he uses a one-word sentence containing two letters, which says more than most writers can manage in a full chapter.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Wes Anderson has cited Vonnegut vy an inspiration somewhere. And while it wasn’t anything mind-blowing or completely crazy or shocking or anything, what’s in that potato barn is vintage Vonnegut.

The flow of the book is fantastic. Upon help from Berman, Karabekian comes to a realization in his life, that he was merely afraid of people, and opens the painting in the potato barn to the public.
