The Japanese ruler himself gave Zen heavy credit and immediately began building a commemorative Zen monastery in Kamakura. Kaso appears to have soured Ikkyu to the Zen establishment. Despite his dislike for establishment, he became an abbot in of Daitokuji and somun to ease the conflicts between Daitokuji and Myoshinji schools of Zen.
In her only surviving letter, written shortly before her death, she urged Ikkyu to become such an outstanding priest that he might consider Shaka and Daruma, fathers of Zen Buddhism, his servants Keene, ; Qui, However, after only ten days Ikkyu ikjyu that Daitoku-ji too had become more concerned with ceremony than with the preservation of Zen, and he wrote a famous protest poem as a parting gesture—claiming he could find more of Zen in the meat, drink, and sex traditionally forbidden Buddhists.
The quantity of invention and accretion attached to Ikkyu’s disappearing certificate has fostered speculation that he never, in fact, actually received a somun. After this experience, he became a Zen master in his own right; however, when Kaso presented the seal of transmission, Ikkyu refused it like ikkyk previous master did.

In Rinzai Zen tradition, he is both heretic and saint. On the surface of this poem, it appears that Ikkyu spent some uncomfortable days at a hermitage in Uji.
